3.5 pounds sounds about right to me.
Think about it, the filter is just paper in a can and the
adapter is a hollow piece of aluminum. They don't weight much maybe little over
a pound. Add the quart of oil, voila there are your 3.5 pounds.
The guys at my airport always wanted me to add a filter to my
engine. When asked why they always replied that it would be better. What and why
would be better was out of there range.
I educated myself and found that our engines were certified on
oil that would allow the dirt created by combustion to settle down in the oil
sump.
This oil had so to say a self cleaning ability. Dirt got
carried to the sump and settled there.
Modern oils don't do that. They are using additives that allow
the oil to keep the particles of carbon in suspension indefinitely. Why
would that be? Because all modern engine are expected to have an oil
filter mounted. It is easier to change a filter from time to time than removing
and cleaning an oil pan - just a maintenance issue.
Because of that, it is better to use an oil filter. Without
filtering one would keep cycling the dirt particles through the engine over and
over again.
So what is someone to do that does not have a filter? Keep
changing the oil in short intervals. 20-25 hours sound about right.
The extra money spent on oil is saved on the filter
installation and the extra cost for the filters.
In the end it all comes to be the same.

That sounds a tad light like maybe they are not considering the extra quart of oil.DICK NANCY & SOPHIE-------Original Message-------From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: 05/30/06 19:38:14Subject: Re: [COUPERS-TECH] Spin on adapter and filter weight? In a message dated 5/30/2006 10:20:57 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:Does anybody know (perhaps from the STC documents), or can estimate for me, the additional weight of adding a spin on oil filter adapter, plus the weight of the oil filter?Eliacim,According to the STC paperwork that came with my TAF oil filter kit, the added weight of the installation is 3.5 lbs.Best Regards,
