I turned my back on an FBO lineman at Poteau Oklahoma who was fueling my coupe on the return leg from Terrell. I had removed the caps and had every intention of re-installing them myself. In an instant, he got his hands on one fuel cap and managed to install it backwards. My fuel caps are in good shape with a good sturdy long tang and a good sturdy short tang. I also have new gaskets on the caps so there is no excess slack. These caps are the bent wire cork float style. Coupe is S/N 932. I have been unable to remove the backwards cap. It is impossible to rotate the cap far enough to align the cap tangs with the proper slot. I need to get the small tang through the large slot and on top of the filler neck so I can rotate the cap. I haven't been able to make that happen. I am willing to sacrifice the cap, but am afraid to put the required pressure on it for fear of damaging the filler neck. Has anyone encountered this problem and successfully recovered? If so, how?
