Hey Andy: I had the same experience when I flew my first Coupe to the nationals in 1999. I used a big screw driver and was able to bend the tangs enough by prying on the cap so that I could force the large tang out of the small hole. I replaced the gaskets after I got home.
    I do not remember the exact sequence, but I do remember using the large screwdriver (furnished by the line guy that screwed it up) to pry the cap upwards enough so I could see the tangs.
    Another option would be to drill out one of the rivets that holds the tangs to the cap. That would allow you to get some clearance to see the tangs and possibly be able to force the large tang through the small opening.
