Hey Andy: I had the same experience when I flew my first Coupe to the
nationals in 1999. I used a big screw driver and was able to bend the tangs
enough by prying on the cap so that I could force the large tang out of the
small hole. I replaced the gaskets after I got home.
I do not remember the exact sequence, but I do
remember using the large screwdriver (furnished by the line guy that screwed it
up) to pry the cap upwards enough so I could see the tangs.
Another option would be to drill out one of the
rivets that holds the tangs to the cap. That would allow you to get some
clearance to see the tangs and possibly be able to force the large tang through
the small opening.
