I had the same problem at the Tri-City airport in Iowa last year when flying
cross country (Nashville to Minneapolis). Took over 3 hours of fiddling
with it, but I did get it off. It did end up bending the tang a little, but
I was able to bend it back. I also needed a new gasket because of it. Now
I am in the habit of always telling the linemen that I'll put the cap back
on. Sometime in the future, I plan to paint a green line on the cap and
wing to help them orientate things should they refuel my plane without me
around.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Backward Fuel Cap Removal

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any
advice in this forum.]----

I turned my back on an FBO lineman at Poteau Oklahoma who was fueling my
coupe on the return leg from Terrell. I had removed the caps and had every
intention of re-installing them myself. In an instant, he got his hands on
one fuel cap and managed to install it backwards. My fuel caps are in good
shape with a good sturdy long tang and a good sturdy short tang. I also have
new gaskets on the caps so there is no excess slack. These caps are the bent
wire cork float style. Coupe is S/N 932. I have been unable to remove the
backwards cap. It is impossible to rotate the cap far enough to align the
cap tangs with the proper slot. I need to get the small tang through the
large slot and on top of the filler neck so I can rotate the cap. I haven't
been able to make that happen. I am willing to sacrifice the cap, but am
afraid to put the required pressure on it for fear of damaging the filler
neck. Has anyone encountered this problem and successfully recovered? If so,
how?
