By the way there is an up side and downside to the snap ring - it
should snap in such a way that the pressure is against a cone shape upwards.
Folks:
If this is true, you need new snap rings. They are not asymmetrical.
In fact, the spec is flat within .005". Sounds like the ones in
question were overstressed. They may have been under sized to start
with. The correct part is not available through most channels.
There is a special tool to install them. It looks like a set of
duckbilled pliers with the jaws turned backwards: serrated edges
out. When you squeeze them they open. Anyone who regularly works on
standard transmissions pre 1960 will know what they are. The part is
an "Eaton" snap ring.
