Is it a common occurrence in Continental Engines for generator shaft to break off (see enclosed photo)? Has anyone experienced such a misfortune? Should the engine be sent for over haul?

I have seen this failure a number of times.  In every instance I believe it was caused by failing bearings in the generator (or alternator, I've seen both.)  The likelihood of further damage depends on how long the engine ran that way.  If you started the engine and noticed the generator did not come on line, then shut it down, I'd be very comfortable replacing the generator, as long as a visual inspection accounts for all the parts and there is no damage to the drive (cam) gear. On the other hand, if it flew like that for 5 hours, I'd be a lot less inclined to skip the teardown and would expect more damage to the generator gear and the cam gear.
