Oh, I forgot to mention. The starter I retuned to Sky-tec
was one of a few bad castings that got out in error. Per Sky-tec.Richard L.

My Sky-Tec lightweight starter was professionally installed and has been trouble free for over a year in my ALON C-90 engine. Local mechanics are very familiar with these starters and routinely install them in Lycoming and Continental engines without problems. Each of the "failures" reported herein by Coupers contain suggestions that installation may have been at fault, not design or fabrication of the starter. Of course, I don't know such to be the case. I'd sure like John Cooper at SKYPORT to chime in here and give his views about the starters and the ease or difficulty of installing them. Additionally, providing serial numbers of failed units and dates of inspection/repair by Sky-Tec would allow prospective buyers to check themselves, prior to purchase. I agree with suggestion above to "go figure".

It is very important to build a dam inside the starter case to prevent any metal particles from entering the rear case while cutting off the shaft. I did have trouble with mine also. It would not make contact while pushing the start button every so often. I called Sky-tec and they told me to return it for repair. They promptly returned it back to me at no charge, it had a defective case. After a few starts later it failed to make contact while pushing the start button again. Since I was away from home base without tools, I found a rock the size of a potato and whacked the back of the starter motor and it has worked great since, go figure. You must do some work to remove some do-hicky which I amsure someone else could tell you what it is. I think the B&C starter is the better choice, however I believe it costs a bit more. I originally installed a Sky-Tec that was not builtcorrectly at the factory. The Sky-Tec folks repaired it under warranty, but I sold it andgot the B&C to replace it. I like this starter much better.Scott
