John,
Well, let’s see. If an F-15 is
climbing vertically at 30,800 fpm and zero forward motion, then yes, I guess
I’d agree that your formula is really more valid.
Heck, even if it’s just climbing at
60° at a true airspeed of 500 mph then it has a forward speed of just 250 mph
and a vertical speed of 433 mph or 38,105 fpm then your formula is really
critical.
What were the climb numbers with the F-15?
What’s the best angle of climb
you’ve seen in a Coupe? I think a 1:10 is overly optimistic but
then I’ve never done any proper climb testing. At those low angles,
the difference between the hypotenuse and the base of the triangle just
aren’t that big.
There are days I wish I’d joined the
Air Force instead of the Army. But the Army was giving me true guarantees
which it met while the Air Force would just promise they’d enroll me in
the program I wanted.
I guess I should have gone into the Air
Guard instead of the Army Reserve even if it would have cost me a rank.
Then, I would have had some chances to get rides in fast movers rather than
just flappy-wing-things.
Good discussion. I like to stretch
my brains.
Ed
