I fly my '66 Alon with an open canopy 90% of the time (except winter). It is my favorite feature. I love the light wind, and wear a leather flying cap with sound canceling headset to minimize noise. I usually take off with the canopy closed, and open it in flight, and land with it open. If I slow down to about 70mph, I can usually fly with my rudders long enough to re-latch (using both hands). For those that think the canopy will detach, I have a chain mod (STC) to "hook" the canopy full-open at the top/front/center which gives the canopy a fourth attachment point. I have often wondered whether a fabric strap could be attached to the canopy frame and used to pull, then clip, the canopy tight to the frame for latching but frankly it is not a big enough problem.
