I think the general concensus amongst us mechanics is to pre-heat below about +/- 40 degrees or so if at all possible. When I was living up in Alaska, in addition to pre-heating the engine, some of the guys would drain the oil - usually when they finished flying - and heat it in their homes (or hangars, or tents, or wherever). The potential is there for forgetting to put the oil back in, but I didn't hear of anyone doing so. On another note regarding engines, CamGuard seems to be showing a lot of promise as an oil additive.
