I solved the immediate problem by bleeding a few drops of fluid out

This seems to imply that fluid cannot escape after application to
allow the brake to release. Usually this is caused by the master not
returning all the way, allowing fluid to bypass back to the
reservoir. If the problem is entirely with one brake, then it
couldn't be the master as there is only one for both brakes. That
said, variation between wheel brakes could cause the problem to be
most apparent on one side or the other.
If it's really only one wheel, then a flexible line likely is
deteriorated inside and acting like a one way valve. Try loosening a
fitting above the flexile line on that side and see if the fluid
still returns. If so, work back toward the master. If not, replace the line.
I added brake fluid several months ago, could over filling it cause
this problem?
Possibly. If there is no air space in the reservoir, it's a lot
harder for the fluid to return.
