Linda,

Please, always feel free to ask questions just like you have been doing.
That's exactly what the list is about. Along the way, lots of other people
learn just by reading and following along. I've learned things in the
course of everyone's discussion as a result of your questions.

What's wrong with asking for advice and help to avoid paying big payments?
We all need help and helping each other keeps flying affordable.

Yep, if we fail on the friendly advice help line, then Tom may be right that
you'll have to seek a good professional. You'll remember I urged you to try
to find a good avionics shop rather than spending bunches on A&Ps like I did
that time. (But trying the best advice by us (your new friends) is a good
first step.)

I know that finding a good avionics shop can be a pain. You may have to
travel a couple of hundred miles to a good, recommended avionics shop.
Those of us out here in "fly-over country" often have to do that because
things are spread out.

You may need to ask a lot of people. In fact the FBOs of small airports out
in the boonies may be the best people to ask for a referral to a good
avionics shop.

Here are a few thoughts to keep you going if Wayne's radio doesn't work:

1. When you get away from your airport, turn off the old, bad radio and
only turn it on if you need it. It seems to work well at first before it
fades.

2. If you can get your ICOM radio well connected to your external antenna,
it might work fine for a primary radio until you sort out the mounted radio.
Mostly, when my Sporty's handheld was clipped to the glove compartment lid,
I'd connect my antenna coax and then it did a respectable job.

3. If you are working on a rubber ducky antenna on the ICOM, it MUST be
raised up so the antenna has line of sight transmission to the receiver.
You cannot expect it to work in your lap or even just part way up. Raise it
well up. I used to mount my Sporty's belt clip on the top of my glove
compartment lid from where the rubber ducky would stick up above the
instrument panel - not great, not terrible. Holding it higher might be
better.

This has been, and continues to be, a good discussion.
