I've just acquired an old C coupe, serial # 285 with a double fork. I plan on
replacing the donuts as they look a bit dry & cracked. I did notice a spacer
on top of the donuts which was about 1/2". Is this the spacer I shouldn't be
using? If not what is the fix as I don't think the Bellevilles will work on
the older gear legs. Thanks

Hi Jim,

I agree that you should not use spacers WITH THE BELLEVILLE SPRINGS....BUT IF
YOU HAVE A DOUBLE NOSE FORK, AND RUBBER DOUGHNUTS, YOU PRBABLY NEED SPACERS.

THE KEY IS TO MAKE THE AIRPLANE SIT LEVEL WHEN IN A STATIC POSITION (
MEASURES WHEN THE AIPRLANE IS SITTING ON A LEVEL PAD, AND MEASURED ON THE
WINDOW SILLS.

THIS ASSURES THE COUPE IS NOW AT THE DESIGN ATTITUDE., SLIGHTLY NEAR NEGATIVE
ANGLE OF ATTACK SO THE COUPE STOPS FLYING ONCE THE NOSE GEAR COMPRESSES.

i AM SURPRISED THAT UNIVAIR AND FAA ALLOWED THE INSTALLATION OF THE DOUBLE
NOSE FORK, WITH OUT REQUIRING INSTALLATION OF THE BELLEVILLE SPRINGS, AS THAT
WAS THE DESIGN CHANGE FORNEY INTRODUCED. tHEIR ADVERTISMENT FOR THE BELLEVILLE
SPRINGS SET EVEN STATES: ".....RAISES TAIL TO PROPER LEVEL"...PAGE 318 IN : THE
ERCOUPE, A TOUCH OF CLASS. PART # fmk-9, $54.80 PLUS TAX FOR THE SET ! IT
ALSO STATES, "NEVER NEEDS REPLACEMENT" :)
