Bob,
The single roller bearing used in your type of nose wheel will have
a little play even when purchased new. Unlike the tapered bearings used in
modern aircraft, you can torque the tapered bearings with the axle nut. In
your e-mail you have not stated problems of shimmy with the nose gear. I
would tend to say that you’re mechanic is a bit unfamiliar with this
airframe. Remember, this is aircraft was built with 1940's technology.

Bob, if you are experiencing shimmy problems please give coupers
tech a try. Folks here can help you and your mechanic identify or point you
to the required technical data for resolving these problems.

I have a 46 "D" (C85) with a nose strut shaped like an upside down ? ...
The nose wheel has a slight wobble that I'm told probably cannot be
taken out. Further, my A&P tells me the bearings need replaced. I also
understand there is a "fork" type strut that offers more stability. Is
this true and is the strut easily switched?
