Hey Kevin: The memo on rebuilding the nose gear limits the up and down play
of the steering collar to .003 thousands of an inch. I have found that by
chucking a slightly worn collar in the lathe, you can remove enough material to
provide a flat surface (which also reduces vertical movement). Sometimes the
collar gets worn so that a .001 or .002 shim is required between the collar
and the nose gear.
I also recommend removing the nose gear from the airplane and
dismantling it, as did Wayne. You end up with a much better product after
repairing the
gear and nose steering system.
