The problem with the general available U-joints is that most of them have 
either no holes drilled or just straight plain holes that use an bolts for 
fastening.
The Ercoupe U-joints are fastened with tapered pins. One would have to ream the 
holes in there. Hard to do without special tools.
 
I believe Univair is doing just that for us when they buy normal U-joints. 
Reaming in the holes. But this extra work is costly.
