Basically, costs. When installing an alternator kit (about $800.00) you may need to rewire to the regulator and whatever buss there is for the extra amperage. Takes money to pay the IA who does it and fills out the proper paperwork to make it legal. My guess is you'll spend about $1200 to $1400 to do it correctly, and we all know that's the only way to do it. An "official" rebuilt generator can probably be had for about $200.00, another $75 for the regulator and it should be only a logbook entry. Having your old generator bumped up to a higher amp (and I'll not go into what that really involves) by the local generator shop should only cost about $100.00.
