Gary, I'd suggest you not rule out the E & G Ercoupes, Forneys and even Alons. Since they are not eligible to be flown by Sport Pilots, they haven't had the big increase in price the C and CD models have.
Also, there are a few C and CD models which have spent time, officially, as D models and can't be flown by Sport Pilots. (Why anyone would change them back, I don't know - might as well get the use out of the increased useful load.) Also, the Alons are more likely to have rudder pedals and that's useful for the checkride so the grandkids won't get an "Ercoupe with no rudder pedals only" restriction on their license.
