The straight push/pull mixture control moves too far and too fast
unless you are VERY careful. You can end up with the engine suddenly
dying instead of nicely leaning out. Then, you end up over-responding
by jamming the mixture back in too far.
With a vernier mixture, you just twist it out til the rpm rises a bit
and starts to drop again. Then you twist it back in a touch and
you're there.
I'll bet some of the old aviators out there can fine tune and explain
this in better detail.
