Tom: Without a picture I'm sort of guessing in the dark.
Damage to the vertical section of the spar is most likely due to impact on the wing tip. There is no approved repair that I'm aware of. There is a service memorandum, #53a that discusses reinforcing the upper flange, but it sounds like this is not where the damage is. You can consult AC43.13-1b (c?) to see if there is a suggested repair, but in the absence of a directly applicable, approved repair, you really have no option but to replace it.
