Could Linda be looking at the transponder antenna, which is OK in the bottom, 
as opposed to the ELT antenna?

  You may be mistaken about the ELT antennas, they are mounted on top as 
recommended by the manufacturers.  Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever seen 
one on the bottom.
