Yesterday, my tachometer went berserk in flight.  First the engine hour
register stopped counting, and then the hand started swiping back and forth
like a lady's hand fan.except in an irregular manner.

OK.  When I turn the prop, the cable turns, so I think the cable is OK.

Anybody know any way to test the instrument, now that I have it out, to be
sure that is the part that is busted?

The tach has been unused for about 2 years while the plane (and I) were
recovering our health.  Is it likely to have merely dried up?
