Along these lines----- have a very liberal PMI (primary maintenance inspector) . He had signed a number of field approvals that other IAs in other locations have had denied. HOWEVER---when I bring up the subject of non TSO equipment he starts getting nervous and changes the subject. When I pressed him concerning a non TSO radio he told me to go to the avionics specialists in the FSDO--these are the chaps who work with Boeing on their installations. :-( So for me, anything I put into an airplane will be TSO'd. :-( Cheers: Paul N1431A KSDM .
