Here's an EAA chapter quiz question and answer:

 

For VFR flight during the day, what instruments and equipment are required ?
(simple a/c - fixed gear)
A - Airspeed indicator. 
B - Altimeter. 
C - Magnetic direction indicator. 
D - Tachometer.
E - Oil pressure gauge.
F - Oil temperature gauge for each air-cooled engine. 
G - Fuel gauge indicating the quantity of fuel in each tank. 
H - For small civil airplanes certificated after 1996, an approved aviation
red or aviation white anticollision light system. 
I - An approved safety belt with an approved metal-to-metal latching device
for each occupant 2 years of age or older. 
J - For small civil airplanes manufactured after 1978, an approved shoulder
harness for each front seat. (other req'mts R.S. 1986)
K - An emergency locator transmitter, (excepts - sing. place ++)

Hi Nick,

Off the top of my head, you need the Airspeed, Compass and Altimeter.

The Garmin has no input from your engine or electrical system.

For the engine, you need a non-electrical Oil Temperature, Oil Pressure and
Tachometer (unless you have a STC or 337 Field Approval to remove them and
substitute electrical or digital alternates).

For the electrical system, you need the Ammeter.

There is other required installed equipment that is not "instruments".
