Hi Ed,
I understand you have a 415-G manufactured by Sanders (all E and G
models were Sanders).
The Ercoupe Parts Catalog presently sold by Univair and Skyport applies
to the Sanders E &
G models. I own a photocopy of a Sanders Parts Price List dated
January 15, 1954. The
trim part numbers it contains correspond exactly with those in the
Ercoupe Parts Catalog.
The trim you describe may be the one described in the Forney F1-A
Flight and Operations Manual
on page 19:
"The control is located between the contour [bucket-WRB] seats, and an
aluminum drive
screw actuating a plastic block to which the trim wire is attached
compose its basic parts.
To the control is attached a one-piece nylon conduit through which the
0.062" diameter
stainless steel wire to the trim tab is run."
On the other hand, it is certainly possible that a prior owner simply
revised the trim system in your
bird to mount a Vernier trim knob in the later trim location. In any
case, I do not believe any 415-G
had the space between bottom seat cushions (or bucket seats) necessary
to the installation you
describe. Your logs or the FAA CD for your plane should list when the
original trim system was
modified to the one now installed.
I apologize for my poor choice of words when I said "...your bird
should have the panel-mounted
quadrant shown in the Ercoupe Parts Catalog on p. 36, Fig. 23, Item
39." It would have been more
correct to have said "...your bird was originally manufactured with the
panel-mounted quadrant...".
More than a few owners have replaced their instrument panels, and if I
owned an Ercoupe with the
"Airliner quadrant" Trim/Throttle arrangement I would likely revert to
a Throttle knob like the 415-C
or a Vernier one) and might well install a panel-mounted Vernier trim
control (via field approval).
If your instrument panel is original, there should be a rectangular
hole centered at the bottom (or
a patch there) where the original quadrant mounted. I also have
original sales brochures for both
E and G models which give some detail as to the original panel and trim
control arrangement.
If your center-mounted trim was installed with proper paperwork, your
mechanic is wrong in saying
it's "not supposed to be there". This could be similarly said about a
5" nose wheel and support on a
415-C, but such incorporation of later model items listed in the type
certificate are common.
I can't say if a log book entry or 337 would be the appropriate
"approval" necessary, but if you like
what you have your mechanic (or the one that did your pre-buy ;<)
should be willing to tie up any
loose ends as to the paperwork to make it "legal".
Best regards,
WRB

WRB.
My coupe is a G model by Sanders With Sanders Data Plate.
My trim is located between the seats.(Vernier knob)
I beleive you may be incorrect (MAYBE)
But obviously the reason I'm asking is because my mechanic says, It's
not supposed to be there.
I am also looking for a Sanders Ercoupe Parts & Nomenclature Manual.
