Hey Bill/Dan: I had a failure (broken wire I found out later) and circled the airport (Augusta GA as I remember) waiting for a signal from the tower. I was low on fuel, and after about 3 or 4 circuits I decided to land. I finally got a green light on short final. Of course after landing I was asked to call the tower. When I told them I had made several circles of the airport, they got very cordial (I do not remember any apology) and thanked me for the proper actions. No, but I had complete radio failure as I approached San Diego years ago. Between Airlines taking off and landing, the Air Force bas, mountains, and ocean I decided only safe place was circling directly above the airport and wait for light signals. Don't know how long I was up there (15 -20"?) and decided to go ahead and land when runway was "free". Figured that would be the end of my license. FBO said the tower wanted to talk to me (duh). I went to the tower and they were very apologetic and kind. They couldn't find their light to give a signal! (I accepted their apology.)
