Here's an even better soulution to lost comm if you have a transponder and can
receive but not transmit on the radio.
Squawk 7600 (lost comm) and listen for a response from the contolling agency.
They may ask, "Aircraft squawking 7600 if you receive this transmission, squawk
ident (flash). If you do, you have established communications that will get
you in the pattern safely and on the ground. (Most towers now have a radar
repeater that shows what the local approach control is seeing).
Rest of conversation might go like this:
"Squawking 7600 if you wish to land at Tampa, squawk ident"
"Roger your ident, enter a left downwind for runway 35 left"
"Squawking 7600, Tampa tower has you in sight, cleared to land runway 35 left".
Easy, no?
But don't squawk 7500 by mistake or you will be met by a welcoming party.
