I don't think what Fred said or what the engineers remember or what life's experience teaches speaks to the original question, which (I think) was "is it legal to install a skull cap spinner on an Ercoupe as a minor modification, or, for that matter, no spinner at all."
I should point out that I doubt if any IA will loose his ticket over this, or anyone get thrown in the pokey. The worst that is likely to happen is someone will get grounded until the discrepancy is corrected. However, I still believe that, should it come down to the FAA's decision, no supporting data for removing or changing the spinner will surface, and the ruling will be that the factory spinner is required.
