I know of three downsides to converting your wings from fabric to metal:

 

1.      The empty weight of the aircraft will increase, perhaps as much
as 40 pounds (18 kg).

 

2.      You can't take the metal skin off every 20-30 years to
completely inspect and repair the insides of the wings.  (Modern fabrics
should last that long.)

 

3.      If kept outside, metal wings are more susceptible to hail
damage.
