Good information, John.

Was that 11 pound differential for the
pair of wings or 11 pounds per wing?

We’ve had a group member who had wings in
his shop and put each on the scale.  He found a 20 pound difference between the
fabric covered and the metal covered.  This matches the old-time handed-down
wisdom.  Hence, I always quote it as the possible weight difference.

Others have said they got less of a weight
difference.  That’s great.  How?  Thinner aluminum?

1. According to my logs, metal wings empty weight increased by 11
pounds--seems about right to me.

2. You can take the metal
off, or at least open it up, every 20-30 years--I just did it.   2-part
self-etching epoxy primed everything.  This will last a long time!
Plus we now have all those inspection holes.

3. You should not leave airplanes uncovered outside, especially a 'Coupe--they
leak.  Ceconite recommends recover every 7-10 years for outside planes.
The fabric wings will be safe from hail but the rest of the plane will be
hail-damaged?

4.  Piere is looking for that polished aluminum look--I say go for it!

Just another view--John N2138H
