Dan,I had a 35 amp generator on a coupe years ago on a 75 hp coupr. Flying out
of Flagstaff (elevation 7000 ft. It definitely made a difference on power
available when i turned off the master switch.  I would not suggest that be
done with an alternator because of the difference in the charging curve. With an
alternator, the battery would normally be charged by the time you are ready for
takeoff.  If needed, alternatop installations have provisions to turn off the
alternator separate from the master switch.
Also, our engfines use a gear drine, not a belt.

Are you saying that switching off the master switch will decrease the load on
the engine with an alternator and/or generator?
I've never heard that and having trouble thinking how it would change the load
much...you still have the belt driving the alt/gen.

Don,         I have the Ford alternator/regulato r on mt coupe and I think it's
great. It is lighter than my generator, puts out about 30 amps at 900 to 1000
rpm and full output at around 1500 rpm. (never checked because battery is up by
the time the engine is warmed up). I was told to turn it off on takroff to
reduce the load on the engine, but the battery is fully charged by then. I
think this came from  the older slower charging generators that only put out
higher amps at high engine speeds. I have seen the new Plane Power alternators
and they do not seem to put out full raed  amps until the engine is at a higher
rpm as compared to rhe Ford unit. The Ford unit has a long ,satisfactory
history used tn the Cessna 150 planes with many thousands of hour in training.
     Hope this helps.

I have in my possession a Ford/Cessna 0200 60 amp alternator and regulator
which can of course be installed on the Ercoupe. I would like to exchange
comments with anyone who has this alternator installed on their aircraft, to
include pros and cons of the conversion.
