Someone down here that does gliders told me about a tape, teflon maybe, that is used to seal the gaps in glider wings. Sounds like it would be better than duct tape, in all respect to Red Green. I do think that a lot of the water that gets into the center section comes through that gap between the wing stub and the wing. Also, after getting nearly drowned at Sun-N-Fun a couple of years ago, I imagine a lot of rain water drains down throught the canopy sills unless you have a cover for the canopy. I had my log book and aircraft papers in the baggage compartment and they looked like wet prunes after two days of rain. All that water just can't be good for the main spar.
