I have the Garmin C96 (two, in fact) - it does the night mode automatically - I have not tried to see if I could reset the clock on it (or does it set itself by satellite like a cell phone does from the tower it "talks" to?) - but I can read it (them) just fine in the day - have 'em on RAM mounts and point them so I see my face in the glass and it is copesetic - "finest kind" (and the displays I do not find at all too small)
