Donald,
Will the plunger move at all in the lower cylinder?  I was referring to the 
bolt that holds the top part to the gear.  Usually it is has a screw head in 
lieu of a bolt head.

No, I have the cast aluminum gear. I am not sure what you mean by "Top machine 
screw". If you are referring to the bolt that holds the top of the strut center 
portion, that one is a bitch to get to.
