Hey Hartmut: I believe that this sort of thing comes from a couple areas.  
First, mechanics (or would be mechanics) servicing the airplane without 
using  the Service Manual and therefore not jacking the airplane at least every 
100  hours/annual and servicing the landing gear properly. Second, the early 
 reputation of not being a "real pilot's airplane" and thus creating a lame 
duck  environment so that many Ercoupe's were kept in a less than desired  
environment.
    Now, due to Sport Pilot rules, the airplane is much  sought after, and 
several have been resurrected from far less than good  conditions.

Dave . He has a used one pair ready, but he can't  get the old one out!
Now there are already three folks on the list  that had rusted solid struts.
 
I was under the impression that these struts  could run low on fluid, but 
rusting solid, that's new to me.
