I think the real concern is " (you or) Your mechanic can determine it is a
suitable part" as John said.

I have seen automotive oil pressure gauges with plastic NPT inlet fittings.

You break a fitting over uninviting terrain and dump all your oil, was the $25
difference in price worth it?

Then there is the hassel of getting a new IA to sign the next annual. Or
selling to a new owner.

FAA-PMA saves a lot of hassel, but as the gascolator story mentioned earlier,
it is still no foolproof guarantee.

John, all of this makes me SO happy I am my own A&P! Like I am really worried
if my non TSO or PMA gauge goes tits up and I have to replace it. There are
many parts of my plane that I would only put on "approved" parts, and the best
ones I can find (my constant orders to Skyport prove this). Sometimes it gets
into making me feel like the FAA thinks I have no common sense.
