Thank you all for your replies, One thing I forgot to mention earlier is this tank is NON-magnetic, and very light weight. I have done quite a bit of work with iron, steel, aluminum, and some stainless steels ove the years, but not ternplate/terneplate, that I am aware of. This tank material appears and feels like stainless steel, and being non-magnetic I will assume it is stainless steel until such time as more evidence convinces me otherwise.
WRB, thanks for reminding me of ESM 31.14, which does go on to say SS tanks can be installed in place of ternplate tanks, without modification, and should be so used. And at some later time, apparently ERCO recommended upgrading to the 6 gallon aluminum tank, as Hartmut mentioned. Jim B. mentioned about not being able to solder stainless steel, but Ercoupe Service Manual on page 47, "Steel tanks (either ternplate or stainless) may be repaired by soldering, and replacing loose or missing rivets. However, it is recommended that ternplate tanks be replaced with stainless steel type." Now I don't know that I would attempt to do a solder repair, but I am sure it can be and has been done. When I do need an expert fuel tank repair, I will contact John Wright as Harry suggested. Thanks again to all for your replies. And for your experience and wisdom. I will continue to lurk & learn!
