More fun and games. Almost flew up to Venice today but found out the, I
believe it is called the Cockpit Resturant, has closed so instead I flew over
to check out the Dade/Collier Airport in the middle of the Everglades. It is
like landing at LAX, if LAX had one runway and if it only had a Unicom. The
runway is 10M ft plus and the taxiways would easily accomodate a 747, in fact,
I almost needed radar vectors to find the parking ramp once I got on the
taxiways. There was no landing fee but they gave me a free landing permit for
a year because the Ercoupe is less than 12,500 lbs. I read that the airport
was intended to be the largest in the world and was built to accomodate
supersonic airliners. One the way over and back, I did notice some fuel
bubbling up just a little in the sight guage on the fuselage tank so I'll have
to check and see what that is all about. Also got to check out my Garmin 396
with XM weather and it worked like a champ. Thunderstorms build like crazy in
the summer here in Florida and the display gave me the option of swinging north
of the storms to avoid them. South would not have been the way to go and I
landed back at Naples just as the sprinkles began.
