Ken,

PKZIP is capable of opening them.  Also I believe any UNIX platform can
unzip them using the command gunzip.  After that, I believe they are in
geotif format.  Greg Reinecke at Geodigital mapping works with USGS DEMs
a lot and may have more information for any problems you might have.
