You can use WinRAR to decompress the files. I
just downloaded all the 250k DEMs for the entire USA and decompressed them all
at once using WinRAR (similar to WinZip).

Subject: opening 250K DEMs?
G'day again
I have just downloaded some 250k DEMs from the
USGS. They are compressed files with names like "winnemucca-w.gz". How do I go
about converting these into something I can load into ERMapper. When I try to
use WinZip to uncompress them it asks for the full name of the file being
uncompressed including it's 3 character file extension. Does anyone know what
the extension should be? Once I have them uncompressed, how to I get them into
ERMapper?
Cheers
Ken Hickey
