I would phrase this as, "we're almost done with the burn," since the
amount of fuel remaining isn't really relevant.

I think the biggest problem is mass fraction.  As usual with SSTO, we
have very little margin.  A mechanical system to make the vehicle
wider would probably use more than 500% of our available mass margin.
I just can't see a way to make one light  enough.
