Once upon a time, in the US, published material without a copyright notice
was public domain. Not any more; the US finally adopted the Berne
Convention, bringing itself into line with the copyright practices of the
rest of the world. The author now holds an implicit copyright unless he
explicitly proclaims the work to be public domain.
