It's not uncommon to give such things a pulse at a higher voltage to move
them quickly, and then drop back to a lower voltage for holding.  The main
issue for higher voltages (and hence currents) is just heating, and if you
do it briefly -- how briefly depends on the thermal mass of the coils and
vicinity -- that doesn't have time to get bad.
