Alternatively, you could try looking at the available commercial
ceramics and pick a few with high proportions of possibly interesting
oxides in them. You would be very unlikely to find an optimal catalyst
this way, but you might find an adequate one. Small pieces suitable
for testing purposes are likely to be cheap, and may even be free if 
you're lucky.
