Apparently, some lower level NASA people made that exact request, but higher-ups reversed it a day later, stating that it wouldn't show anything useful. It seems that no pictures of the underside were made. Knowing now the resolution achievable with the Maui telescope, it certainly would have been worth looking at. The trouble is, if they *did* see the damage, the country would have been subject to a very painful 'death watch' as they stayed in orbit.
