You didn't have to get them down right away to save them, you only had to resupply them and though that would have been a technical challenge, it would have been doable until you could get them down safely. There have been all kinds of articles in the papers about warnings ignored. The technology was there, but there was a bad mind set. That really sucks big time.

The whole idea of "let's not look because there might be a real monster
under the bed" is simply pathological.  Denial cannot work.
