I truly love puppies - there is nothing like puppy breath and puppy bellies!
That being said, I know that puppies have much greater hope of finding a good furever home than the older dogs or ones that are less than "perfect". As a result, I have a soft spot in my heart for the elders, in particular. Sadly, it only takes growing beyond the puppy stage in many cases for potential adopters to start looking the other way. So... with the exception of my Wagner, who clearly chose me at the shelter as a 16wk old puppy, I have opted to take the dogs that people tend to overlook. My angel Quinn was 8 years old when I found her cowering in the back of a cage with 2 other younger, active dogs. Most of her fur was brittle and broken off - and she had what looked like smears of grease on her back. She surely wasn't very pretty. Within 6 months in her new home with us, she became one of the most beautiful eskies I have ever seen. Perfectly white, thick, soft as cotton fur, and a beautiful tail plume raised high over her back, when it once was nearly bare and hanging low. She spent her remaining 9 years living the life she had always deserved. What a blessing she was - and what a teacher! She taught me the importance of loving the "unloveable" until they become loveable once again. I miss her. Baby Fox was rescued a little over a year ago at the age of 5. She has a congenital cataract in the left eye, and one of the shelter volunteers told me that people thought it was "yucky" so she was passed over time and time again. :( Of course, that eye hasn't phased her in the least, and she is the most gentle dog I have ever known. If my work life ever settles down, I would like to have her become a therapy dog. She loves little children, believe it or not, and would be wonderful with disabled kids and the elderly. Our newest critter, Ziggy Stardust, is probably about 3-4 and heartworm positive, and has been with us only a couple of weeks now. I've written about him before, so this is my brag for anyone reading that might not have seen it previously. He's a southern boy from Tennessee that came to me through Jamie! It was a long haul, but the shelter director drove him all the way to Maryland where I met her. Now he's a Jersey Boy. When Ziggy got his first checkup with chest x-ray here ( to look for evidence of heart/lung damage), we learned he had been shot at some point in his life! He has a bullet very close to his heart, but that's where it will have to stay. He's a lucky fellow for a lot of reasons! Yup, I love the puppies... but the others tear at my heart. But their loss was actually little Maxie's gain and he wound up with a loving home with you. I now they aren't all that lucky. But sometimes it seems as though it all happened for just the right reason. SOunds like the dog was accepting the baby as part of the pack, although not in the most preferred way...lol. Well, they are nice folks but young and obviously not thinking at all. Yes, they were dumb. But they and Precious are fortunate. Their vet is our vet. When they called to ask about surrendering the pup, our vet sent them straight to me. We drove up and got her the same afternoon. She came with her food, toys (lots of them), blankie, treats. Obviously she was well treated until the baby was born and they figured out it might not be a good idea to raise two babies at once. The one and only eskie we got at our shelter was given up for the same reason but I've seen it so many times. "Too much work now with a baby". Really? We have five children, four cats and three dogs and we manage just fine, thank you. Back when it was Hubud, the cats and I, I added a husband (never did like him but we kept the husband anyway) and then the kids started coming and we all adjusted just fine. Never once did I ever even consider not having him in my life. I'm not going to say he never got overstimulated with all the commotion but he would seek out a quiet place and we'd respect that.
