Just an FYI on this topic. The inability to use username/password is also a major critique that is coming from internal examinations of various micro-blogging systems (ESME, laconica, etc.) I've created a JIRA item to deal with this (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ESME-52) and it would be useful if somebody took a a look at this issue and tried to estimate if this would be difficult to implement. Good point, but it's a good idea to eventually use user/password authentication in the future. If this is not desirable for a production scenario, it should still be possible to disable it.
