I'm against a 140 character limit since I don't really see a reason for it and it does limit expression and force conventions that I think limit adoption in a work setting. People really do prefer full spelling and regular grammar in these settings, especially non-native speakers of whatever language is being used.
I would be for making it a configurable option (per deployment, not per user). However, that doesn't really make the UI any easier.
