One thing I proposed on SILC a few days ago, that I would like to see
is minimisation being removed as an action, and instead allowing
windows/objects dragged past the edge of the screen turned into tabs
(as was possible with folders on MacOS Classic). This has several
advantages:
1) It can be done very quickly by a user (wrist-flick the window at
an edge)
2) It gives a lot of space to put minimised windows in (all edges of
the screen except the top)
3) It is easy to un-minimise, since you get the aiming-for-the-edge-
of-the-screen bonus to Fitts' Law.
4) I like it.
That's a really good idea, yes. And while we are here, make it happen
not just for window, but also for drag and drop items as well. Eg you
dnd on the edge, that creates a flap.. (it's actually exactly how dnd
worked on the Newton -- drag it to the side, it creates a flap, that
you can later reuse..)
Yep -- I really like this idea too. Although, I'm probably going to
give you only two screen edges to add windows/objects to, as the left
side will likely stay reserved for Project switching (and perhaps
short cuts for search windows -- I'm still working that out).
The big remaining questions then are:
- If this can be done for any object, does this then take the place
of the Shelf?
Yes and no. It replaces the always-visible-clunky-annoying shelf. The
shelf should become a dashboard-like view. To put something on the shelf
you drag it to the shelf icon (which is attached to the edge of the
screen). The shelf takes up the whole screen, but is only visible when
it is needed.
- Do these window stay global, or are they Project-specific? (ie:
when we switch to another Project do they disappear or persist?)
They persist. This would be an easy way to move open documents from one
project to another.
- Wouldn't a miniature view of the window be better than a tab
(since some documents may not have names anyway)?
A thumbnail of the document would be best. And while I'm speaking of
thumbnails: I think a thumbnail should also have a water mark showing
what kind of document it is. Like so for a URL: (See Thumbnail.png)
